by Elgan Baker, Ph.D.

Monday, September 13, 2010
7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Workshop Description

The history of hypnosis and psychoanalysis are closely interwoven, beginning with Freud’s trip to Southern France to study with Charcot and Janet at the end of the 19th century. Despite Freud’s eventual decision to discontinue his clinical experiments with it, hypnosis has continued to be practiced by psychoanalysts of every persuasion and has proven to be a useful adjunct to traditional psychoanalytic techniques. This presentation will explore the various applications of hypnosis within a psychoanalytic frame to address process issues, transference management, support of uncovering, interpretation and working through, and the treatment of structural pathology and developmental arrest. Lecture and case material will be included.

Learning Objectives:  After this workshop participants will be able to:

1)  Name three ways hypnosis has incorporated various theoretical paradigm shifts in psychoanalysis.
2)  Name three ways hypnosis can be used to address process management in psychoanalytic therapy.
3)  Describe the use of hypnosis to treat structural pathology associated with pre-neurotic arrest.
