Workshop Description

This case presentation will highlight the self-psychological treatment of a patient with troubling masochistic fantasies. The case material will serve to help explicate some of the primary tenets of self-psychological theory. Discussion and comments from the attendees will be encouraged.


Schedule and Format

The meeting will begin promptly at 7:30 pm with the introduction of Dr. Frauman. His presentation will include group discussion of the case.


Learning Objectives:  Participants will be able to:

1) Explain how the concept of the self object is useful in treatment
2) Distinguish two types of self object transferences
3) Understand how self psychology conceptualizes symptoms
4) Understand how defenses against self object transferences can occur


About the Presenter

David Frauman, PhD, has written several papers and has presented at regional and national conferences on self-psychological theory and practice.  He is in private practice in Indianapolis and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
