Workshop
Description
The Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM) is a collaborative effort of the five major psychoanalytic organizations. Conceived
as an alternative to the symptom catalogue approach of DSM-IV,
the PDM provides a framework for understanding both the deeper
and surface levels of an individual’s personality, emotional, and
social functioning.
The PDM begins with the recognition that therapists treat people,
not just symptoms. Hence, the PDM focuses on personality
diagnosis and case formulation as the foundation of good treatment.
Workshop attendees learn to apply the PDM framework
to diagnose personality patterns and disorders; learn to
distinguish healthy, neurotic, and borderline levels of personality
organization; learn about the scientific evidence for the
psychodynamic
personality theories described in the PDM; and refine case
formulation skills through discussion of clinical cases presented by
workshop participants.
The PDM is a collaborative effort of:
1) American Psychoanalytic Association
2) International Psychoanalytical Association
3) Division 39 of the American Psychological Association
4) National Membership Committee on Psychoanalysis in
Clinical Social Work
5) American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry
