PSYCHOANALYSIS WITH CHILDREN PRESENTING WITH SYMPTOMS OF ASPERGER'S:  SEARCHING FOR AFFECT

Monday, November 13, 2006
7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Presenter:  Sidney Anderson, Ph.D.
Sydney Anderson, Ph.D., an associate faculty member of the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute and a child analytic candidate.  She has presented on this topic and others for several organizations.  She currently is in private practice in Bloomington, Indiana as well as director of the internship program (APA approved) at the Center for Behavior Health in Bloomington.

Seminar Description
Children with symptoms of Asperger's syndrome seem to be impenetrable, unreachable.  How relevant is dynamic therapy of child analysis to these children?  How do you tell the difference between a truly autistic makeup, omnipotent defenses, and severe obsessional defenses?  What are the advantages and risks of an analytic approach to these children?  This presentation will address these questions through the presentation of material from a child analysis.  The possible meaning of eye contact (or no eye contact) will provide an organizing theme for the material.

Objectives:
1)  Identify two reason why Dr. Anderson finds the dynamic therapy relevant to children with Asperger's Syndrome.
2)  Identify two differences between autistic makeup and omnipotent defenses.
3)  Name one advantage and one risk of the analytic approach with these children.
